WEEK 3: THE WOMEN

If it were up to the judges, we would see nothing but big-voiced women of color belting out old tunes for the rest of the competition. I think they all sound great, but they all sound THE SAME. Boring. Even Antonella was a pleasant change-up. For this reason, one of those has got to go. I am guessing that Lakisha will be robbed as Melinda steals all of her votes.

Who should go this week: Antonella and Hayley
Who will go this week: Hayley and Lakisha

The individual breakdown:

Antonella Barbra:
Very good song choice for her. Simple with lots of melody. Who doesn't like this song? I still don't like her, but I half expect to see her next week.

Gina Glocksen:
Not quite as good vocally as whatshername from Evanescence, but exactly what she needed to get through this week. White girl can rock it out! Do I sense a Joan Jett song in her future?

Hayley Scarnato:
Not awful, just not great. Hayley is out of her league, but she is the only clean cut girl who could be on a teen magazine cover in this group!

Jordin Sparks:
OK, but she led off and I forgot about her halfway until the recap. Not the most memorable, which doesn't bode well.

Lakisha Jones:
Great vocalist, but tough on the eyes. I know it is a singing competition, but it's television, not radio. And HDTV only amplifies the looks.

Melinda Doolittle:
Randy's right. This girl is a pro. She is almost too good, like somebody grabbed her out of Motown and snuck her into the competition. My only concern here is that she may be faking her humility and that she seems a bit old.

Stephanie Edwards:
Great vocalist, but she has all of the bad traits of Fantasia. When she sings, it looks like she is telling off her man, waving her hands and shaking her head. I felt like I had cheated on her just watching her sing. I love the short hair and her classic look, but her mannerisms just don't seem to match it.

Sabrina Sloan:
Great singer when she's not yelling. Too bad she yells a lot. She's great and has a good look, a bit like Gloria Estefan. Need to see some personality from her.

BSC Awards: Stephanie: I'm not sure I agree with Randy that no one can sing a Chaka Khan song [as in Whitney, Celine, ect] - except for I feel For You because let's face it, it's just not the same without Melle Mel on rap vocals and Stevie Wonder on harmonica - but in this case I just didn't feel like this was a good song for Steph and she never really seemed comfortable with the lyrics or melody [even if she did make J uncomfortable watching her].
Great Song Choice Award: Gina [even if she doesn't have nearly the range of Amy Lee of Evanescence] it was good to see her pick something that really fits her personality and she looked great rocking out & Melinda, who is W-O-M-A-N, who picked what might be the perfect song for her. Could she go all the way?
Best Pretty Woman Outfit: Anonella - short skirt + thigh Highs = A woman you might meet on Hollywood Boulevard after dark.
Cream of the crop: Melinda and Lakisha

Random thoughts: After another week men's night, I am starting to get the feeling that the top 4 could all be women. There maybe too many women who all fit into the same genre [Lakisha, Stephanie and Melinda] to have them all stay around till the final 3, there just might not be enough votes to go around. For those ladies that are sort of middle of the road at this point [Jordin and Sabrina], you need to give the audience something more memorable then just a good song with a pretty voice. Engage the crowd; get us folks at home tapping our feet [Gina did just that this week and I think she'll make it through even if she's not the best singer]. To make it deep into the composition you will need to start getting the voting viewers to start to like you as a person as well as a singer.
